Why vray or mental ray

Mental ray has GI final gathering turned on by default. That's over a minute of rendering after tweaking on a faster system for vRay compared to 9seconds render time for the default mental ray.

Mray has a very powerfull engine of photon simulation and if you tweek it enough on a production i assure you you'll have a bad time finding the differences between the render and reality. Vray is not that good, it may become, and its a fast renderer that achieves godd results in no time, but i wouldnt choose it to have a platinum detailed quality production.

Mental ray is to powerfull and the only issue is that you have to tweek a lot to get what you want, its almost a science on itself.

People have different tastes, and you may prefer vray, but mray is just way ahead on everything if you know how to work with it. Its a fact, nvidia bought it in an not for cheap, theres a reason why. Message 1 of Message 2 of Message 3 of Message 4 of Vray is better in production Message 5 of Preview file. Message 6 of Hi there, I know I'm in the wrong discussion group, but perhaps you could answer my question: I'm a student, and need to purchase a desktop computer for Autocad purposes. Please suggest the best one. Thank you! Message 7 of Message 8 of Both MR and VR are very good.

If you can, I suggest trying out both of them. Message 9 of Anyway if you take a closer look you can see some significant differences In 1 hour of render Mental Ray delivers a much detailed GI compared to V-ray, it is just a little noisy in the dark areas but it is not so noticeable.

The contact shadows rendered by Mental Ray are far more realistic : using the old Final Gather the overall look was similar to v-ray, but using the brand-new GI-Next we can achieve the level of detail of a Brute force render with the speed of the famous V-ray Light Cache, in this particular interior render scenario.

Mental Ray and V-Ray are two very similar render engines, based on my experience I don't see any particular reason to switch from one render to another if you already have experience with one of the two.

V-ray have some unique shaders to do special effects like architectural slices , dirty and curvature maps, but Mental Ray have the revolutionary MILA shader, which is an amazing shader for pro artists.

V-ray has its own external render window V-Ray framebuffer where you can do some color correction. V-Ray has a lot of tutorials and documentation but nowadays Mental Ray is simpler to learn than V-ray: I know, it seems incredible but Nvidia's devs reduced the options to the minimum, and they did a very good job! Mental Ray also support any native Maya feature fur, x-gen, fluids, volumetrics, particles, optical FXs, etc Mental Ray and V-Ray can do both great renders, they can do high-end production renders, just try them and understand what is more comfortable for you.

Fell free to share your opinion and your experience in the comments below! But some things that lacks in vray, is the simplicity. When it comes to the building of materials, you soon get headsick. Also it lacks the integrated part, which lets you get a preview of your work in your 3D modeling software.

And thanks for this comparison, it makes us choose which render engine we shoold use. Mental ray is not so inferior to both V ray and Arnold, so, I am going to stick with it for a very long time.

I am keen on pairing Mental ray and Arnold. Arnold would be my new hot renderer. Your email address will not be published. Save my name, email, and website in this browser for the next time I comment. Don't subscribe All Replies to my comments Notify me of followup comments via e-mail.

I experienced both as a beginner, I was frustrated over Vray and realized I had to spend more time learning it and experiment with it before I could get rid of all noises in an interior scene and the timing was high too…. So I switched to MR 3. This thread has been automatically closed as it remained inactive for 12 months. If you wish to continue the discussion, please create a new thread in the appropriate forum. Difference between mental ray and vray.

What is the difference between mental ray and vray? Why do we use mental ray? Can you give me a tutorial of mental ray where light does not coming from window. It will be night and light comes from Interior bulbs.

Brian-Bradley UTC 4. Hi All, Definately agree with the first statement, not too sure with the second though. Regards Bri. Locutus UTC 6.
